"A Wonderful Place to Live"

Why Shoot Portrait Photography in Fountain Valley, California

Wikipedia calls Fountain Valley, California a “classic commuter town”, which seems to downplay what the area has to offer in the way of portrait photography. While many people may live here as a more cost-effective means to commute into the greater Los Angeles and Orange County areas, there’s still plenty of perspectives to discover that will aid in your quest for a great portrait location.

What Fountain Valley, California might lack can be quickly found nearby thanks to its central location to the rest of Orange County. For one, Huntington Beach is a mere hop, skip, and jump away. Yet, there’s plenty of serenity to be found in what is essentially a quiet and quaint upper-middle-class town in Orange County.

The Secret Garden

Don’t get this garden confused with the popular novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett—Fountain Valley’s secret garden isn’t nearly as grand but it makes up for it in its proximity to Huntington Beach and its relative seclusion due to its hard-to-find entrance.

Thanks to Fountain Valley’s fair weather, plants are in bloom pretty much all year. The secret garden serves as a secluded backdrop for all types of photography and is a favorite of mine for portraiture.

Huntington Central Park

Even Fountain Valley has its own Central Park, even if it’s not as breathtaking as the one found in New York City. However, the park is full of immaculate landscaping and it’s easy to traverse.

Huntington Central Park is a great place for me and my clients to roam with my camera—you’ll always find something new or have a few old staples that make a great backdrop or add to the atmosphere of a portrait.

Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve

While much of Fountain Valley, California has a distinct suburban look to it, Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve provides an altogether different backdrop for your photos.

The preserve surrounds an ecological reserve, which protects a large swath of coastal wetland. The reserve’s sweeping, marshy landscapes can act as a great backdrop.

Huntington Beach

While Huntington Beach isn’t exactly in Fountain Valley, it’s close enough that it doesn’t take much effort to get there. I like to give my Fountain Valley clients some outside options just in case they’re not too invested in the region.

Fountain Valley is a great place but much of the area blends together. Huntington Beach can be a great creative shock to the system when shooting on location in Fountain Valley—it’s something unique and unlike anything you’d find in the valley.

Do I get to select the images?

Part of my job is making the image selects and choosing the most flattering photos. I do not want to deliver images that are repeats, blurry, out of focus, shots of you blinking, or mid-sentence speaking.

I do not withhold any images, I only remove the “bad” ones based on the criteria listed above.

Can I edit the Images?

I ask that my clients do not add filters or crop any of the final edited images. I spend time ensuring the color balance and tones are correct in each image! If you want a particular edit style please let me know before the shoot and I can accommodate since I have experience editing many different styles.

What about time and location?

I suggest blocking out 2 hours for your shoot the time. My timeframes are pretty generous. I usually wrap up earlier if I am able to shoot quickly.

I plan shoots based on one location and its surrounding area. There is a small additional fee for each additional “location.”
